On our last nigth in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, Shannon, myself and our two new friends Heather and Jon Duri (JD) mounted the hill overlooking the bay. It was a 20 minute walk from our hostel, Hostel Esperanzas, which was right on the beach at the far end of town. We passed through the strip, restaurants and bars along the beach populated almost exclusively by tourists then across a meter wide walking suspension bridge into a more residential part of town. through a small barrio at sea level and up the base of the hill, the homes became progressively finer and more extravagant.
We passed into a gated community with a guard on the road, only encountering sprawling houses (one even had a swimming pool) circling to the top where the 20 meter high statue of Jesus was casting his benevolent hand over the cities residents. the sunsets in San Juan del Sur were usually magnificent and this one was no exception. Without a preview of the photos i was taking, none of them turned out and that spectacular sunset photo remains to be taken.
Jon Duri, saying goodbye to nicaragua, he would travel with us back to san jose and from there home.
a less than flattering picture of Heather and Shannon. Heather will be meeting us in San Isidro for a time before we leave south.
Yes, that is a five masted sailing cruise ship anchored in the bay. Rumour has it that all of the passengers were too old and out of shape for the dance and could not partake in most of the jungle adventures for tourist during their one day visit.
before the sun set....
Hey man, can't a guy get a cab around here!
San Juan del Sur, our hostel is a little to the left of the red building on the shoreline.
Probably my favorite painted house in town. there was a purple one that was really cool too.
the firetruck just hanging out. it is actually a light seafoam green.
a book on the porch is a great way to pass the time.
The most frequented city park i have seen so far, beautifully painted and well attended by all. Especially with church in the background.
if you look closely, you'll discover this woman is joggin down the beach with five dogs and a parrot on her arm.
that kid is as shocked as i was

Manuel Antonio
some places and things
was it meant to be?
this waterfall is on finca fruicion about 3 minutes hike from our bus. you can only see a part of it, it totals about 60, 70 ft high. on a recent day i stripped down and freeclimbed to the top with another guy. flippin sweet. i dont have a picture of the other waterfall on the land but it is 30 ft high and perfect for showering, which i did yesterday
a very colorful, very beautiful mural at the bus station that wraps around the walls
sunset
same sunset
desiree's house... building in progress
the view that is often filled with butterflies
in our hostel in manuel antonio
this is the fog, not at its thickest, that often blocks the views seen elsewhere. the farm is at 1000 meters above sea level and it is often in a cloud.
yes that is me chilling in a hammock, enjoying the view
this is a town meeting in san augustin, the closest town to us (about 500 meters), the town is a church and two little stores where we can buy unhealthy snacks, this community center, about ten houses and a spectacular soccer field(easily the most well kept part of town save maybe the church). the topic is a transcontinental industrial power line that will connect the US and columbia and is going to travel through the valley we can see from the farm deck. major bummer. we are literally the only uncompleted portion of the line and people are trying to fight it, which is good.
the bus we can take to and from the farm once a day, six days a week
the municiple bus station waiting area
candid shot
San isidro church. on the outside there is a mural of a saint doing farm work. agriculture is big here.
