the mudslide

this is the result of 6 days of near constant rain. most of you who read this have never experienced six days of near constant rain. i can hardly describe it besides that it was amazing and muddy. tropical storm tomas caused a shitload of mudslides and costa rica is in a national state of emergency. over 20 people have died last i heard (probably closer to 40). this mudslide is on the road to San isidro from finca fruicion. the first slide covered the road and an enormous backhoe dug it out in the rain, dumping all of the mud off the side of the steep hill. it slid down, taking trees and brush with it (and a lot more hillside) and covered the bottom part of the same road. not very efficient and in fact much more damaging since the rain was not over and it caused more erosion and more mud. for days now they have been trying to clear the road (which was washed away, they are cutting a new one in the hillside). this blocked our main way into town. the slide would not have mattered because the river flooded so much it took out the bridge too. this is the story for much of the country right now. mud and flood.
